Chapter Twenty-One

~

“L

ook who rolled in from the provinces,” Zach said as he opened the door.

Justin admired the tall house as the carriage rolled up. It was a standalone home sitting in a tiny park. It looked elegant, but the smooth face had fine wrinkles under the closer examination that Justin gave it when he lugged his things to the front step.

“This is my house?” Justin asked, looking at the cracking paint on the front door.

“No. We are renting, and I will show you why when I give you the tour. First, let’s get your luggage inside, and then we will stroll to the next block, where there are flats with lots of restaurants on the main floor,” Zach said. “I’d rather eat out than endure my cooking.”

“You know how to cook,” Justin said.

“I know, but somehow when another does the cooking, it tastes even better,” Zach said.

Zach showed Justin how to lock the back door first and then the front. Some of the houses were separate residences, but most were flats. The student quarter had grown to encircle the house.

On the next street, just as Zach claimed, the setup was slightly different, with shops and restaurants on the ground floor and the flats above. Supposedly, Rebecca and Farah’s flat was one more block away from Justin’s house. He didn’t know since he was the first to leave the vacation party.

“There is a Lokian restaurant a few doors down. I love Lokian food, even if the Wonn Empire has broken their sword repeatedly trying to conquer the Lokians,” Zach said.

They opened the door and walked through a wall of beads threaded on strings into a room full of pungent smells.

“The Lokians like a lot of spice in their food,” Zach said. “Let’s find a table, and I’ll tell you what I’ve learned about our Teawater friends.”

They sat at a table, but Justin didn’t want to hear about Teawater.

“I have something to talk about first,” Justin said. “My real mother’s name was Fidelia James. I’d like to know if she is still alive, but even if she isn’t, I’d like to know who she was or is. She will have magic.”

“Grant mentioned that you might want to pursue your real mother. It might be something better left alone,” Zach said.

“No,” Justin said. “I’ve had months to think about it, and I’d like to know the truth.”

“Your wish is my command,” Zach said. “I’ll begin my search as soon as you settle in. Now, the Teawater boys.” Zach said. “I should say ‘boys,’ since some of the thugs were women with shaved heads.”

“Did Buck and Hubie make it with you?”

Zach frowned. “A few cuts and bruises. That includes me. They’ve already done their Telsian tasks and are returning to Manford.”

“Were you attacked by the drivers?”

“Oddly enough, no,” Zach said. “We caught up to the wagons, but by the time we reached them, they had joined a big caravan. I suppose that was a good thing. The drivers didn’t touch us but didn’t have the circle and wave tattoos.
